Research Reports

Randomized Trial: Sunnyside GOTV

Mail is a popular tool in large-volume voter outreach programs, despite relatively little data showing any efficacy of mail at motivating voter turnout. In 2023, we partnered with a group of five organizations to compare the efficacy of mail vs door-knocking at turning out infrequent voters in Sunnyside, WA. Read more here for additional details, results, and recommendations for reaching low propensity voters.

Ballot Initiative Impact Analysis

The ballot initiative process is a powerful direct democracy tool, empowering voters to advance popular policies at the ballot box and bypass political gridlock in state and local governments. We partnered with the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center (BISC) to investigate how ballot initiatives impacted voter turnout in 2022. Read more here to learn how specific issue types motivated turnout of infrequent voters, and how support for progressive issues differed from support for Democratic candidates.

WIRF Impact Evaluation

As the COVID-19 pandemic swept across Washington, one particularly vulnerable group was left out of direct assistance programs: undocumented Washingtonians, who disproportionately suffered from the acute and long-term effects of the pandemic. Gov. Inslee and the state legislature eventually created the Washington Immigrant Relief Fund (WIRF), providing direct assistance to these communities in 2020 through 2022. Read more here to learn about the program and the impact that it had on specific immigrant communities throughout the state.
